Four albums are to be released by artists Aki Rissanen, Mikko Innanen, Joonas Riippa and quintet Röd/Blå. Two launch shows are to take place in Helsinki and Turku.
Behind the mysterious title 1 + 2 + 3 + 5 = 4 of this compilation of albums loom Aki Rissanen’s electro-acoustic solo recording Sturm, Mikko Innanen’s experimental sax project F60.8.2 Interlocal Field Recordings, Joonas Riippa’s debut 105% and the quintet RöD/BLå’s concept album Franz Biberkopf. The equation that bends mathematical rules is perfectly logical when we take a look at the line-ups of the four groups: 1 = solo, 2 = duo, 3 = trio and 5 = quintet. The albums, however, are independent works of art despite the heading and the shared label, Ilma Records, – and attitude, of course. The four groups will take the stage twice this month, in Helsinki at Koko Jazz Club and at Turku’s Café Tiljan.
Before this project, Ilma Records produced four albums in years 2008-2010, licensed on the French record label AEON Records. These albums were Aki Rissanen’s La Lumière Noire (AECD0870), Verneri Pohjola and Joonas Riippa’s Michelin Star (AECD0871), Mikko Innanen F60.8’s Digital Home Recordings (AECD0872) and Pekka Tuppurainen Röd/Blå with Broo, Innanen, Riippa and Rissanen (AECD1091).
After these recordings Ilma Records took a break to evade draining the creative well. Despite the break in release activities, the groups continued gigging actively albeit on an irregular basis. But Ilma Records has always been about emerging from the shadows when the time is right for music that no other label dares to publish. Now it seemed that the right moment had arrived: each of the abovementioned artists was looking for new ways of expression and Ilma Records seemed like the right channel for experimentation.
Unlike the previous four albums that spoke for the physical recording, the new four-album compilation comes out in digital format only. Despite the fact that in the sphere of art music this format is still being frowned upon, it has to be acknowledged that in many other genres digitalisation has become the norm. Ilma Records does not have anything against staying where they are; in the margin, but they take the aim of bringing out music that deserves attention seriously.
