The concert series hosted by trio HERD will bring top class guests to Lahti this autumn.
The HERD Club series, launched last autumn in Lahti, will have a continuation this autumn with brand new guests. The club series will be kicked off on 6 September with Eero Koivistoinen, a living legend of Finnish jazz, as the first guest. With Koivistoinen (b. 1946), one of the pioneering figures in the Finnish jazz scene, at the helm, the quartet will perform a medley of some of the most ground-breaking Finnish jazz compositions from the 1960-1975s. The praised collaborative project was premiered in Helsinki in April 2013 and recorded by the Finnish Broadcasting Company, Yleisradio. The concert saw also the release of a compilation CD of the original versions.
This autumn, on the second Saturday of each month (with the exception of September when the club will be held on the first Saturday), HERD will be joined by a number of feature artists at Pikkuteatteri: in October the trio will feature the Finnish-Swedish vocalist Anni Elif, in November the internationally recognised Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola, and in December vocalist Aili Ikonen, who is familiar from the former collaboration project, Jazzbasilli. Aili and HERD will also have a very special guest, who has seen the golden age of the Finnish popular song with her own eyes, Vieno Kekkonen. Before December, HERD with Aili Ikonen can be enjoyed live at Lahden Jazztori festival on 11 September.
Trio HERD, founded in 2009, have already accomplished a lot, despite being a relatively young group. During their fife-year career they have won the prestigious European Jazz Competition for jazz groups, played at almost every Finnish jazz festival and released two albums. This year they have been touring Finland with Aili Ikonen extensively. HERD is composed of vibraphone player Panu Savolainen, bassist Mikko Pellinen and drummer Tuomas Timonen. The trio began hosting their own club series in 2012 at the National Theatre’s Lavaklubi in Helsinki. Having proven a success, the club was launched in Lahti and Hämeenlinna in the following autumn. In 2014 the HERD Club will be organised exclusively in Lahti.
