Duo the Partylandmen bring out an eight-volume series of recordings this spring. "Sketches of Pain, Volume 1" came to the biggest digital music shops on 13 Feb 2015, and the second volume will be available for purchase on 20 Feb 2015.
The Partylandmen is a jazz duo, composed of the Hämeenkyrö-based pianist-organist Jouni Joronen and the banjo and guitar wizard Lauri Hannu, hailing from Sahalahti. Thus, when we are talking about the band's home city, Tampere seems like the closest option.
If pigeonholing is needed, the band describes their style as improvised music performed by the Hammond and the banjo. Were their stuff available at any record shop, they would be classified under "jazz/free". Were the shop to sell any jazz. Were any record shops still alive and kicking.
Both Joronen and Hannu have been in the scene for a long time. The pair is at home in any musical genre, so it is no surprise that the freedom of improvised music suits them well. Improvisation does not, however, have to mean a lack of an underlying structure or random notes dropped here and there - not necessarily. The taster "Laiska lintu" is a good example; it can be called blues with a touch of free or it can be called tight jazz. Improvisation is in the ear of the listener.
Sketches of Pain, Vol. 1 is now available for purchase via Bandcamp and iTunes.
