Drummer Simon Phillips, known for Toto, Judas Priest and Mike Oldfield's bands, brings his jazz rock’s super group, Protocol IV, to Validi Karkia’s summer club.
One of the most respected drummer in the world, British-born Simon Phillips comes to Pori at Validi Karkia’s summer club with his top quartet. Phillip has left his mark on the popular music’s recordings since 1970’s. Already in 1976 he played on Walker Brother’s Line album, in 1977 Judas Priest’s classic Sin After Sin album got Phillips’ drum tracks and in 1980 he was the drummer of Jeff Beck’s There and Back. Phillips was the man behind the drums for 1983’s hit, “Moonlight Shadow” by Mike Oldfield and in 1992 he got the invitation to join Toto to replace deceased Jeff Porcaro. During 21 years were born hits like “Unchain My Heart” and “I Will Remember”.
Joint-tours with Mick Jagger, The Who, Jack Bruce, Peter Gabriel, Joe Satrian, Tears For Fears, Roxy Music, Nik Kershaw, Al DiMeola, Stanley Clark, Robert Palmer, Whitesnake and David Gilmour are only a small scratch of Phillips’ talent and ideas in his large discography of hundreds recordings. In recent years he has played in virtuosic jazz pianist Hiromi’s trio together with Anthony Jackson.
In 2014 Simon decided to leave Toto behind and focus on his own compositions and touring with his own Protocol band. Album Protocol IV was released last October and with it new members were brought to the group; guitar virtuoso Greg Howe and keyboardist Otmaro Ruiz.
Howe has made his own guitar music for decades receiving praises from the press. However, his biggest gigs he might have played with Rihanna, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake and Enrique Iglesias’ tour bands and albums. Keyboard wizard Otmaro Ruiz is known for his collaboration with Dianne Reeves, Frank Gambale and Lee Ritenour. Bassist Ernest Tibbs has made a name for himself in the bands of Allan Holdsworth and Andy Summers.
The surprise visit to Pori’s Validi Karkia club includes Phillips’ material composed for Protocol, strong melodic jazz rock and the great celebration of virtuosic play and improvisation. Making jazz fusion sexy (again)!
The concert is held at Pori Lyseo’s Lyseo hall, which is the 16th venue of Validi. The pre-tickets for the concert are on sale on 12 June. The band will also perform at Keitelejazz on 30 June and Koko Jazz Club Helsinki on 4 July, while visiting Finland.
