The launch party for the EP One More Devil will take place at Helsinki’s club Dubrovnik on 25 October.
Sextet Dalindèo is known for bending and extending the sound of Finnish jazz. Now the fearless combo is to release a new EP containing five new songs. Entitled One More Devil, the disc incorporates a range of influences from Americana to Finnish tango and limelights especially the guitar playing and solos of the frontman Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen.
Two of the songs, “One More Devil” and “Daydreaming”, were completed one day before hitting the studio. To honour the traditional recoding methods of jazz and ensure the freshness of the take, the group has recorded the EP live in the studio. The title track is a continuation of the piece “Another Devil”, which is included in their second album and paved the way for their surf-inspired sound. The track “Daydreaming”, on the other hand, sweeps your thoughts away to an open prairie.
The EP features Dalindèo’s very first recorded cover song, entitled “Oh What You Do To Me” and better known as a tango popularised by Olavi Virta, the king of Finnish tango.
“It is really great to see how the band’s swing has got stronger and the attitude more relaxed thanks to frequent live shows. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, which allows the joy of playing to come forth,” says Pöyhönen.
Dalindèo’s fourth studio album, Slavic Souls, came out internationally in 2016. True to its name, the disc took the band even further into soul and Slavic melancholy; indeed, their original surf-jazz-tango-extravaganza draws freely from a host of genres, including jazz, Finnish tango and popular schlager.
Dalindèo’s line-up has seen no changes over their 14-year career. The frontman, composer Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen is known also as the leader of the kick-ass orchestra Ricky-Tick Big Band & Julkinen Sana, and the rest of the band members belong to the frontline of Finnish jazz and pop.
