The recipient of the 2020 composition grant of the Church Music Composers' Association and UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra has been selected. The grant recipient will compose a five-minute work for UMO Helsinki's 16-member big band in the Silent Music church concert series for Easter 2022. Nine applications were received by the deadline.
The grant is awarded to composer Ilkka Hammo, who is now composing his first work for UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra.
Ilkka Hammo (b. 1983) is a versatile composer, guitarist and teacher. His production is strongly focused on instrumental compositions and comprehensively explores the expressive possibilities of different instruments. Hammo’s compositional style is characterized by musicality, virtuosity, dramatic emotional charges and rhythm.
Church Music Composers Association (Kirkkomusiikin säveltäjät ry) promotes and supports creative composition and arrangement activities in the field of church music. It acts as a liaison between its members and oversees the artistic and professional interests of church music composers and arrangers. The association organizes an annual project, such as a seminar or music event, and distributes grants to its members.
