Changes to Turku Jazz Festival program: Nils-Petter Molvær's quartet replaces Nicholas Payton

Nicholas Payton has regrettably had to cancel his European tour and his subsequent performance at Turku Jazz Festival due to a travel problem. Instead of Payton’s trio, Norwegian trumpet player Nils-Petter Molvær’s Stitches line-up will take the stage Friday 4 March.

The versatile trumpet player and composer Nils-Petter Molvær has become known in the fields of pop, rock and funk, and especially as a master of electroacoustic jazz. At Savoy JAZZFest, he will perform with his line-up created for the album Stitches, which includes Molvær, drummer Erland Dahlen, bassist Jo Berger Myhre and guitarist Johan Lindstrøm. Stitches was recorded during the corona lockdown, and in its music, Molvær’s touching trumpetism encounters dynamic electronic soundscapes.

Molvær has the ability to find just the right musicians around him to complete his vision, where improvisation blends seamlessly with the composed material. The mutual trust within the band is conveyed in a strong way, and each member of the ensemble has the space to exercise their artistic freedom. The end result is both poetic beauty and dramatic power play - music that creates hope in the midst of chaos.
