On Friday, August 9, at 7 PM, the festival kicks off with Swedish world-class jazz guitarist Ulf Wakenius. The Grammy nominee takes his audience on a rhythmic and melodic journey with his virtuoso playing at the Alandica cultural center.
At 8:30 PM, the acclaimed Timo Lassy Trio continues the Friday evening, led by one of Finland's brightest jazz artists. In addition to saxophonist Timo Lassy, bassist Ville Herrala and drummer Jaska Lukkarinen shine, providing the audience with top-notch ensemble playing, strong compositions, and expressive live energy!
On Saturday, August 10, at 3 PM, a unique musical experience awaits with rising jazz star, trombonist Hampus Adami, at the Maritime Chapel in the Maritime Quarter. In an intimate solo concert, Adami interprets Duke Ellington's timeless songs in honor of the legendary jazz master's 125th anniversary. Despite his young age, Hampus Adami has already established himself in Sweden's jazz circles and will be heard more in the future!
At 7 PM on Saturday, Nina Mya takes the stage at the Alandica cultural center with her program "Jazz Meets Gospel." Mya is an award-winning Finnish jazz singer who soulfully combines jazz, soul, and gospel in her music. She is joined by pianist Henri Mäntylä and saxophonist Joonatan Rautio, who bring a jazz spirit to the gospel interpretations through improvisation.
At 8:30 PM, the esteemed Åland-based group Whatclub closes the evening at Alandica. The band was nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize in 2023. Their inspiration comes from the "gypsy swing" genre created by Django Reinhardt in Paris between the world wars. Joining Whatclub on stage is guest soloist Antti Sarpila, an award-winning and internationally renowned jazz musician, as well as the rising Swedish jazz star, trombonist Hampus Adami.
On both evenings, the jazz celebrations continue with free jam sessions at the nearby Arkipelag hotel, where the audience can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and spontaneous music from festival performers, visitors, and local musicians.
Advance tickets for all concerts are sold via Tiketti. When purchasing tickets, it is possible to support the John Nurminen Foundation's marine environment work. Tickets are also sold at the door if the concerts are not sold out in advance.
Åland Sea Jazz is one of four festivals in the Archipelago Sea Jazz series, which also includes Baltic Jazz, Korpo Sea Jazz, and Turku Sea Jazz.
