Biography
The third album by DANTCHEV:DOMAIN, To Those Who Have Gone, I Sing in a Key of D, is a collection of stories rooted in gratitude for life, heritage, and music. These narratives intertwine with the expressive and multifaceted musical language of Finnish-Bulgarian singer-songwriter Anna Dantchev.
True to its title, the album resonates entirely in the key of D. Gratitude and the fragility of life reflections on life's transience, and the encounters and experiences it brings, inspired Dantchev to write a full album dedicated to gratitude. Her musical language draws on the traditions of two cultures, enriched with elements of jazz and blues. The result is a sound defined by strong melodies, profound storytelling, and rich rhythmic expression.
"From the very beginning of the composing process, the contours of life were powerfully present. My thoughts wandered to childhood memories, ancestors, the future of my children, experiences of a broken heart, perseverance, fears of what lies ahead, and the sorrow of loss. At the same time, those thoughts reflected sunshine, warmth, and the way roots keep us standing, how love binds us across generations. Gratitude – that's what emerged."
At the start of the production process, Dantchev learned she was living with a life-threatening illness.
"The songs suddenly gained a concrete meaning, and I couldn't ignore the unpredictability and fragility of life during the making of the album. Inevitably, the illness brought its own nuance to the interpretation of the songs."
Despite this, the album is not a lament but a heartfelt tribute to life.
"This album is full of warmth. Its color is a warm yellow. It carries, in my own voice, both demons and the flowers of the meadow. Singing my own songs is the greatest tribute to everything I have received in life."
Musically, Dantchev began with the simplest of elements – her strongest foundation: the resonant note of D.
"My music isn't just major and minor; it lives in other modes as well. In the studio, we even added more D to some pieces, when it felt like something was missing. D is a metaphor that strongly guides me forward."
