New Finnish super group Mortality releases debut album

entry-image

Mortality consisting of leading musicians of Finnish jazz releases its debut album later this year. The ensemble makes its debut at Tampere G Livelab on 13 November.

Mortality’s same name debut album is a concept album with the theme of death and limitedness of human life. The pieces are originally composed by the producer of the project, Tapio Ylinen, who wrote them after the tragic death of his wife. For the album, each member arranged one of the pieces, with the view to create a total artwork under a collective theme.

Mortality combines the concept art aesthetics of progressive rock and the sound world of jazz to harmony and improvisation. Despite the heavy theme the music on the album is delicate, melodic and full of hope. Each member gives their own, distinctive interpretation of the topic in their pieces, while producer Ylinen’s tone painting maintains the coherent whole. The album art of graphic artist Aarni Ylinen gives the final touch for the comprehensive artwork.
