Too busy relaxing at mökki for Jazz-Espa fortnight? Can't make it to afterwork at Espa stage? Not to worry, there's always jatkot!
The Finnish Jazz Federation warmly welcomes you to the 17th Jazz-Espa Festival. The two-week concert series sees twenty Finnish jazz acts entertain music-lovers this summer on the Espa Stage in the Esplanadi Park. All Jazz-Espa concerts are accessible, free of charge and open to all ages. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Finnish Jazz Federation, Jazz-Espa dresses up to a Jazz Federation's colours and turns up the volume by presenting as many as three large orchestras this year. The crown jewel of these big-band-sized ensembles is of course UMO Jazz Orchestra.
On Sunday, August 7th, the jazz carnival will culminate to the traditional one-day festival, Jazzjatkot (jazz afterparty). Instead of the Lasipalatsi Square, the 'jatkot' is now to be organised at Allas Sea Pool, just off the Market Square. The setting may change but the philosophy remains: like before, Jazzjatkot welcomes the whole family to enjoy the coolest jazzy music and leisurely picnic vibes. At jatkot we get to enjoy trumpeter Jukka Eskola's new Soul Trio and rough jazzpunk riders Mopo with their new collabo with singer-songwriter Ville Leinonen on the terrace stage of Allas. When the sea breeze begins to get cooler in the evening, We Jazz DJs will take the party indoors to the club. The headliner of the afterparty is jazz & soul diva Nina Mya, leading her own sextet of top Finnish musicians.
Jazzjatkot is also the aftermath for We Jazz afternoon in Lonna island just outside the city, a 10-minute ferry ride away. We Jazz X Lonna is a live radio show, DJ-set and live jazz paradise happening every summer Sunday from noon to 6pm.
