Turku-based Aura Flow to play in Helsinki and Tallinn

entry-image

The acclaimed quintet celebrates the release of their debut by hitting the road.

Aura Flow, formed by five Turku-based jazz musicians, has convinced many with their energy and is a fitting reminder of the bourgeoning jazz scene of the old capital. This bunch of rising stars issued their aptly named debut “You’ll Hear From Me” in January, which will now, indeed, be heard live on this and the other side of the Gulf of Finland. The group will take the stage at Koko Jazz Club in Helsinki on 9th May and at Philly Joe’s Club in Tallinn the following day.

Aura Flow, started in 2011, is composed of saxophonist Max Zenger, pianist Henri Mäntylä, guitarist Henri Marjamäki, bassist Teemu Åkerblom and drummer Jussi Fredriksson. The last mentioned, by being the driving spirit behind the association Flame Jazz that promotes jazz events in Turku, has contributed significantly to the local jazz scene. Their debut was hailed enthusiastically by critics and fans of jazz alike.

Aura Flow performs saxophonist Zenger’s and pianist Mäntylä’s compositions. The grapevine has been effective in spreading the word about their intense live presence, and the group has played to full houses from the start. Jazz is Aura Flow’s mother tongue but there is no denying that the local dialect adds a distinct swing to it. This group’s music is straight-ahead jazz, played with a fresh candidness. Without taking any pressure of being bigger or smaller than they are, Aura Flow succeeds in sounding both strong and balanced.
