Between composed melodic structures and counterpoint with free interaction, Platypus Ensemble explores the possibilities of communication in music as four equally important participants in a conversation.
The Helsinki-based band was formed in 1997 and has extensively toured abroad (Germany, Frace, Switzerland, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium) as well as in Finland. Platypus Ensemble has so far released five albums that all comprise compositions of pianist Sid Hille but some include also collective free improvisations.
Platypus Ensemble's music can be described as Scandinavian/European acoustic jazz with experimental and ethnic influences. In recent years more and more compositional consepts of contemporary classical music have also been included into their music.
