Pauli Lyytinen Magnetia Orkesteri was formed by Pauli Lyytinen based on the sounds of its musicians. The saxophonist got the inspiration from the fascinating, open tone of the instrumentation combining trumpet, saxophone, double bass and drums. In addition to Lyytinen the band consists of trumpeter Verneri Pohjola, bassist Eero Tikkanen and drummer Mika Kallio. According to Lyytinen all members have a dark, rough and wooden sound besides their own identifiable style. Together their sound is warm and rich.
Their robust performances and close to earth sound have widely attracted positive attention. Magnetia Orkesteri extends their expression from ethereal atmosphere to groovy avant-garde and their concerts are strongly based on improvisation. Lyytinen’s compositions provide a great setting for everyone’s strengths but also challenges musicians to seize unfamiliar spheres of music. The ensemble released their lauded debut album I in 2017 at Pori Jazz Festival.
The orchestra released its second album Hypnosis in March 2020 with Eclipse Music. Hypnosis takes its listener to etheric soundscapes, where true to the album's title the album investigates subconscious, temporal and spatial essences. Kallio's beautiful gongs and Lyytinen and Pohjola's plus pedals bring new elements to the arrangements.
