Jockefeller Jazz Quartet (JJQ) is a Vaasa-based jazz quartet that has been active since the beginning of 2019. All of the orchestra’s musicians are long-time players, who wanted to combine a longing to play jazz in good company.
Joona Ekroos is already best known as a rock-solid drummer for rock bands. Saxophonist and keyboard player Roger Holmlund is a music teacher and has become known for a very different kind of musical connection as a conductor of the band Charlies. Guitarist Jari Ojalainen has been in involved in bringing 20th century German-style salon jazz to Finland in the ensemble Klaus Van Der Kampf and Pallosalama orchestra.
Bass player Jouko "Jockefeller" Pesu took a 30-year break from working as a musician when artist Erkki Liikanen happened to ask him; "Do you know Jouko, how to become a millionaire in Finland as a musician"? Liikanen's answer, "start playing as a multimillionaire", made the young bassist wake up to reality and go get "a real job."
JJQ has recorded their first album, Jatsia kullekin, whose songs move from swing to the fusion jazz. The recording was made at the beginning of August 2020 at the HaVu studio in Vaasa, and Matti Oja was responsible for the recording and mixing.
