Emmi U. Trio is the latest project of jazz pianist, composer, and vocalist Emmi Uimonen. The band's debut album Junassa builds a bridge between Nordic jazz, Finnish psychedelic folk, and Brazilian rhythmic music.
Uimonen primarily composed the Junassa album with a small trio lineup, allowing space for vocals and Finnish-language lyrics. The songs reflect longing for the end of wars, defending equality and the inviolability of self-determination, and the endless incompleteness of life. The songs have been described by audiences as fresh, refreshing, and touching.
The trio consists of bassist Tuomas Talvi and jazz drummer Chico Matada from Mozambique. Uimonen herself plays piano and sings simultaneously, alternating between the role of vocalist and pianist during performances, and switching from piano solos to scat singing.
