In the span of few years, Aurora Hentunen Quintet has risen to the top of Nordic jazz music and is one of the most interesting contemporary Finnish jazz bands.
The band released their Second Spring debut album in 2018 and their second album Frost in 2019. In addition to pianist-composer Aurora Hentunen, the ensemble consists of trumpetist Joona Kilponen, bassist Veli-Matti Silanterä and drummer Ville Luukkonen. Previously known as a quartet, the band has taken saxophonist Ukko Heinonen as reinforcement. Heinonen has already been involved with the band on concerts and on the album Frost.
The band will release their third album Little Further in the spring of 2024. The third album reflects the mood of the pandemic and times of war, a forced collective pause, and uncertainty about the future. However, Little Further gently guides towards continuing one's own journey and trusting in tomorrow. The album features produced and programmed sounds alongside acoustic explosive improvisations. String arrangements add additional atmosphere to the album tracks.
The quintet is actively touring all over Europe and is currently expanding its activities to big band music as Hentunen does commissioned work, i.a. for Lappeenranta Big Band and Jyväskylä Big Band. The band also regularly collaborates with other musicians, giving space to new influences and tones in their music, constantly looking for new ways to adapt their old music and create new ones.
