Sanna Ruohoniemi, based in Stockholm, Sweden is the latest in a long line of strikingly individual Nordic artists & composers who successfully melds the open-sky freedom of jazz with the rich folk traditions of her homeland.
Considered among one of the young generation’s most interesting vocalists & music creators in the Nordics, Sanna is known for her improvisational verve and creative risk-taking. Her debut album Tales of a Stranger (Eclipse Music 2016) was acclaimed and honored by critics around Scandinavia. With her second album, Start from Nothing (Eclipse Music) she continued the bold and self-determined journey into the world of modern vocal jazz, offering a rich and vibrant combination of what jazz music can be all about. The album was picked by Europe Jazz as one of the best album releases on November 2018.
On Ruohoniemi's third album Let Everything Happen modern jazz, Nordic folk music, bebop, and tango converge, featuring songs sung in English, Finnish, and Swedish. In addition to her original compositions, the album includes a Finnish version of Zetterlund's classic Sakta vi gå genom stan, which Ruohoniemi places in her former hometown of Helsinki.
Sanna Ruohoniemi stands out on the jazz scene with her natural charisma and compositions. In recent years, Sanna has performed extensively around the world. In addition to the Nordic countries, Germany, Albania, France, and Portugal, Sanna has presented her music at events such as the Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival, representing Europe as the sole artist from the continent.
