Elena Mindru is a Romanian born jazz vocalist, today based in Finland. She began her career at the age of 15 and has been taught by the likes of Bob Stoloff, Mary King, Darius Brubeck and Jukkis Uotila over the years. To Finland Mindru ended up through a Nordic graduate programme in 2012 and she was accepted as a postgraduate student at the Sibelius Academy the following year. She is currently working on her thesis on the techinical aspects of jazz singing.
She leads her own group Elena & The Rom Ensemble with whom she has so far issued two albums. The newest, Evening in Romania, came out in 2014, two years after the debut, Romanian Christmas Stories. Mindru has been successful in several jazz competitions, including Montreux Shure Jazz Voice, in which she came second in 2012, and the Finnish Young Nordic Jazz Comets semi-finals, which took her to represent Finland in the inter-Scandinavian final competition with the Rom Ensemble.
She has also collaborated with a number of big bands, such as Euroradio Jazz Orchestra, Transilvania philharmonic orchestra, Jyväskylä Big Band and Finnish Air Force Combo during the years 2014 and 2015.
