Till Brönner and Valtteri Pöyhönen's all star ensemble open the Savoy's autumn season

The autumn season of the Savoy Theatre starts with a unique music happening: SavoyJAZZ September 2018 will bring together top Finnish and international stars of jazz. On Saturday 15 September, performs Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen Nonet and German trumpet virtuoso Till Brönner. On Sunday 16 September, the stage is taken over by American saxophonist and composer Seamus Blake. 

German jazz trumpeter Till Brönner comes to Finland for the first time to perform at Savoy stage. He plays with the jazz pianist Jacob Karlzon.

Till Brönner is Germany's leading jazz trumpeter and is also widely known for being a member of the jury and mentor in the casting show ‘X Factor’. Brönner has played and collaborated with such artists as Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett, Annie Lennox, Sergio Mendes, Kurt Elling and Milton Nascimento.

Jacob Karlzon is a Swedish jazz pianist and composer who has worked with, among others, singer Viktoria Tolstoy. Karlzon has produced 11 albums. He is known as an open-minded musician who is passionate about improvisation.


The Saturday begins with Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen Nonet. In addition to Pöyhönen, the all star ensemble consists of  Pöyhönen (electric guitar), Jukka Eskola (trumpet and flugelhorn), Petri Puolitaival (alto saxophone and flute), Jussi Kannaste (tenor saxophone),  Antti Rissanen (trombone), Ville Vannemaa,  (baritone saxophone and bass clarinet), Ville Herrala (double bass) and Jaska Lukkarinen (drums). They perform Pöyhönen's work,Tigers Are Better Looking,  with clarinetist Antti Sarpila as soloist. 

On Sunday the SavoyJAZZ weekend continues with saxophonist Seamus Blake. Blake, one of the most prominent artists in his generation,  will perform at Savoy Theatre’s stage as a soloist in Sibis Alumi Big Band. Blake brings his own compositions and adaptations and acts as a conductor and saxophonist for the band. The vocalist is Diana Payton.

The legendary guitarist John Scofield called Blake "extraordinary, a total saxophonist". His music is known for its sophistication, bold improvisations and “sheer swagger".
Blake has released more than ten albums under his own name, including a superb album called Superconductor (2015). Blake is a regular performer for Mingus Big Band, Antonio Sanchez and Bill Stewart.
