Raoul Björkenheim TRIAD, led by the eponymous pioneering Finnish guitarist, has been recognised in the American jazz media New York City Jazz Record. The magazine listed the best of 2017 in several categories, including Release, Concert and Artist of the Year, in its January issue, seeing TRIAD rewarded with an Honourable Mention for their debut album, Beyond. In fact, the adventurous guitar wizard Björkenheim’s name featured twice in the listings: in addition to the TRIAD album, a trio show given by him Joe Fonda and Gerald Cleaver at NY’s Zürcher Gallery was selected among the Concerts of the Year.
Raoul Björkenheim TRIAD toured Finland only a few weeks back on an extensive Finnish Jazz Federation tour. In addition to the guitarist, this meditative brotherhood is composed of bassist Ville Rauhala, known for his explorative touch, and nuanced drummer Ilmari Heikinheimo. The quietly powerful disc Beyond garnered excellent reviews upon its release also in the Finnish media: five-star reviews appeared in newspaper Savon Sanomat and music magazine Soundi, among others. The album came out on Finnish label Eclipse Music, whose releases have featured in New York City Jazz Record before: another Eclipse-release, Approaching, the debut of Finnish jazz quartet Liberty Ship, was picked among the Albums of the Year in 2013.
