Mopo to play 24 gigs in 24 hours at We Jazz 2014

Mopo24 sees the jazz-punk trio Mopo play 24 gigs in 24 hours on Friday 12 December, some venues including Radio Helsinki, the main office of Teosto, mbar, Tavastia, the Parliament House, the cab stop of Eliel Square, Sörnäinen tube station and ABC petrol station. The concept is one of the several commissioned works to take place at the We Jazz 2014 festival.

Mopo, the wildest jazz trio in town, plays 24 gigs around Helsinki on 12 December starting from 12:00. The 24-hour tour belongs to the programme of the We Jazz 2014 jazz event, and will see the trio play at a number of unusual venues, such as a cab stop and a few offices. The venture, also dubbed as a human experiment, is intended as a statement against the rationalisation and tightening working pace of the modern society.

Formed by saxophonist Linda Fredriksson, drummer Eeti Nieminen and bassist Eero Tikkanen, Mopo has toured Finnish schools this year, so playing at unusual settings is nothing new to this group. Mopo24 begins on Friday 12 December at the studio of Radio Helsinki, Teurastamo, from where the group will head to the office of Teosto, Levykauppa Äx on Fredrikinkatu and the office of Helsinki Festival, in Lasipalatsi. During the evening and night they will play at Musta Härkä nightclub, Fafa’s in Kamppi and in front of the Parliament House. They will also appear as Olavi Uusivirta’s guests at Tavastia. The remaining gigs will take place at Hakaniemen kauppahalli, Kahvila Sävy on Aleksis Kiven Katu and at We Jazz Jazz Brunch at restaurant Siltanen. The other act to play at the Jazz Brunch is the winner of the We Jazz 2014 Rising Star Prize, Mikko Sarvanne Hip Company, while We Jazz DJs will spin records in the intervals. The audience can witness this 24-hour human experiment freely by showing up at the abovementioned venues, mostly free of charge. The gigs take place every hour on the hour. The schedule is available here.

The second edition of We Jazz event invades Helsinki 8 – 13 December, bringing some Finnish and international top jazz to town and challenging traditional ideas of the jazz venue and, indeed, jazz music. Mopo24 is one of the four commissioned works to be seen at We Jazz 2014, alongside M.A. Numminen’s opening address, Tatu Rönkkö’s kitchen concerts and Antti Lötjönen’s 3X performance. Friday’s programme includes the European star group Phronesis, legendary Olli Ahvenlahti and Eero Koivistonen’s Ahvenlahti-Koivistoinen 3G Quintet and the enchanting trio Elifantree.
