Trombonist Jay Kortehisto made his debut in the Finnish pop and jazz scene more than two decades ago. Those two decades have seen him appear on almost 200 recordings by various artists, including the likes of Dallapé, Jimi Tenor and rapper Elastinen, in a number of TV house bands, and on countless Finnish and international concert arenas.
Despite the fact that he is mainly known as a trombonist, Kortehisto has always had a fascination with singing. Now, on his first solo recording, he has decided to realise a long-time dream of making a vocal album. This new album is comprised of Kortehisto’s original pieces in Finnish and it will make him a welcome addition to the sparse ranks of Finnish male jazz singers.
The first single “Arlanda” tells about an eternal vagabond who, nevertheless, is fond of his fate. There is a hint of the melodicity of pop in the smoothly swinging jazz piece. In addition to Kortehisto’s key crew saxophonist Pope Puolitaival, drummer Jaska Lukkarinen, bassist Antti Lötjönen and pianist Mikael Jakobsson, the track features guests saxophonist Timo Lassy and trumpeter Jukka Eskola.
“I have made so many different kinds of music over my career that this background is no doubt very tangible on the album. Finally I feel ready to bring out music of my own. I know what I want, and the courage to take this step has accumulated over the years,” he says.
Jay Kortehisto is a vocalist and trombonist born in Seinäjoki, Western Finland. His first instrument was violin, which he took up at the age of five. In 1994, he commenced studies at the Oulunkylä Pop & Jazz Conservatory, Helsinki, majoring in the trombone. Already next year he was playing in professional circles, and since then he has been a trusted name in the field of Finnish pop and jazz music, irrespective of the genre. In 2013, Kortehisto started his own group Screaming Jay & The Bones, which gave him the opportunity to grab the mike alongside trombone-playing. Today, Kortehisto is known as a charismatic and expressive performer.
