OVER 200 CONCERTS PRODUCED IN 2018 WITH SUBSIDY FROM JAZZ & ETNO FINLAND LIVE

In 2018, €150,000 worth of subsidy funds was distributed, representing a €16,000 increase in total funding amount compared to the previous year.

Jazz & Etno Finland LIVE is a joint endeavour by Jazz Finland, the Finnish Musicians’ Union and MES (The Finnish Music Foundation). Launched in 2015, the scheme aims to establish an industry-wide and unified subsidy system which supports the regional availability of professionally produced cultural services, employment across the independent and freelance arts sector, and the continuing improvement of the prerequisites for the industry. In addition to the funding model, Jazz & Etno Finland LIVE supports a national network for jazz and world music club operators and concert organisers. In 2016-2017, the project had a sole focus on jazz music and was titled Jazz Finland LIVE. In 2018, the subsidy was extended to include world music and the scheme was renamed Jazz & Etno Finland LIVE.

Jazz & Etno Finland LIVE subsidy was open for applications in 2018, and 13 applicants from 11 different towns were selected as recipients. Application criteria included qualities such as operating on a professional level, being eligible for municipal funding and organising concerts on a regular basis. In 2018, €150,000 worth of subsidy funds was distributed, representing a €16,000 increase in total funding amount compared to the previous year (2017: €134,000). Each recipient received a subsidy amount based on their approved municipal funding and the draft concert schedule included in the application. The total amount of municipal funding in the project was €150,000.

Jazz & Etno Finland LIVE subsidy funded 242 concerts in 2018, with a total audience attendance figure of 31,524. The concerts engaged 924 musicians who were paid through the Jazz & Etno Finland LIVE funding.

The activities funded through Jazz & Etno Finland LIVE have produced a significant amount of regionally accessible cultural events, as well as creating new opportunities and pathways for the participants.
