Cream of Finnish Jazz Awarded at Tampere Jazz Happening

The Finnish Jazz Federation, the umbrella organisation of Finnish jazz, awarded trumpeter Verneri Pohjola with the Yrjö Jazz Prize on Friday 3 November at Tullikamarin Pakkahuone. Given annually to a distinguished jazz artist, the Yrjö is the most prestigious jazz prize in Finland. The prize, this year an artwork entitled Big Girl by artist Jenni Tuominen, was received by Pohjola at Tullikamarin Pakkahuone, Tampere Jazz Happening. The Varjo-Yrjö Prize, granted by the Finnish Broadcasting Company, was given to Koko Jazz Club for its successful effort of expanding its activities.

Timo Lassy Band Celebrates 10th Anniversary on the Road

The internationally recognised tenor saxophonist and composer Timo Lassy takes his band on an extensive Finnish tour on 31 October - 17 November. The tour locations include Espoo’s Sello Hall, Pori’s Finnish Club and Helsinki’s Koko Jazz Club.

Nordic alternative jazz takes over the clubs of Kreuzberg

A night of Nordic jazz will open the urban Berlin-based music festival Scope on Wednesday 18 October, seeing five Scandinavian groups take to the stage of Privatclub. In this year’s Nordic Jazz Comets showcase, Finland is represented by VIRTA who have been rapidly climbing to big leagues in recent years. Mixing jazz, electronic music and post-rock for a dark and dramatic effect, the trio is reaching for international success convincingly.

Kalevi Louhivuori Quintet on Jazz Finland Tour

Trumpeter Kalevi Louhivuori leads his quintet to the first Jazz Finland tour of the season. The tour begins on September 20 in Savonlinna, and finishes in Turku on Saturday the 30th. Later in the fall also Raoul Björkenheim Triad goes on tour under the Jazz Finland umbrella. Jazz Finland also supports Timo Lassy Band's 10-year anniversary tour.

Suomalaiset jazzsävellykset vihdoin julki nuottikirjoina

Viapori Jazzissa lauantaina konsertoiva pianisti Seppo Kantonen on koonnut suomalaisten jazzsäveltäjien teoksia kattavasti yksiin kansiin. Ensimmäinen osa neljän teoksen sarjasta julkistetaan ennen pianistin Piae Cantiones 2.0 -konserttia Suomenlinnassa.

Jazz-Espa and Jazzjatkot break audience records again

The eighteenth edition of the annual Jazz-Espa concert series and its final-day festival Jazzjatkot drew over 4,000 people to the Espa stage and restaurant Kappeli during the two-week period from Monday, July 24th to Saturday, August 5th. The free open air concerts portrayed altogether 22 topical, Finnish jazz acts.
